As a bonus in a quality-packed Sydney Festival offering, young Sydney-based songstress Catherine Traicos sang some of her new material accompanied by WA bass clarinet prodigy Philip Everall and her own piano. She is a singer who, like Longstreth, bends, slurs and pitches between the notes – but with an engaging vulnerability. She’s one to watch out for.

Catherine would like to invite you to join her as she launches her new album with three very special (and different) intimate shows.

Based around an old book of her poetry Catherine stumbled upon, In Another Life is an album that deals with the past, present and possible future and delves into what was, is, and could have been. What better way for Catherine to launch the album than with some shows that present the multiple facets of her current performances and hint at the possibilities of what is to come.

Catherine is joined on-stage by her “all-star” band, the Starry Night as they delve into songs from 2011′s Gloriosa and present for the first time to the public many of their startling new works.

Sunday October 28 — Melbourne
Catherine Traicos will be performing In Another Life in its entirety all by herself. This will likely be the only time this ever occurs so make sure you don’t miss this very special moment in time.

This collection of original pieces draws upon the strengths of both classical and popular contemporary music to produce a work that is once surprising, intriguing and, ultimately, incredibly beautiful.

“While visiting Brisbane after the terrible floods I was struck by the vision of a flower growing out of the mud.  Maybe I only noticed the flame lily as it is the national flower of the country of my birth, Zimbabwe
The flower’s striking red and yellow seemed a symbol of victory in a bed of dirt. The flower was the Gloriosa Superba and I chose to name the album after it.”

Gloriosa sees Catherine Traicos and her new band, The Starry Night offer up a beguiling blend of alt-country, blues, roots and folk, delivered by one of the most delicate and beautiful voices in contemporary music.
Under the direction of 5-time ARIA award winning producer Paul McKercher, The Starry Night;   guitarist Darren Nuttall (Tucker B’s, Machete Moon), bassist Kasper Kiely (Sketching Cato) and drummer Tim Day (O) bring an assured yet restrained touch, allowing Catherine’s ethereal voice to shine through.
The attention to detail and the imaginative and skilful arrangements brought to the album by Traicos and the band create a work that is refreshingly understated and elegant.

The songs on Gloriosa focus on specifics but touch on big themes: love, life, death and place all feature in Traicos’ organic yet particular lyrical construction. The moods of the album switch deftly, from darkly desolate to playful, tender and melodic, a little like the songstress herself.
