The Unnatural Congress of Still Beating Hearts

The Unnatural Congress of Still Beating Hearts

What happens when one of Australia’s finest emerging singer-songwriters joins up with one of the most exciting talents in classical music? Sydney chanteuse Catherine Traicos and West Australian bass clarinet prodigy Philip Everall aim to find out with the premiere of their new work, The Unnatural Congress of Still Beating Hearts.

Traicos’ sublime delicate smoky voice and brilliant live performances have seen her compared to everyone from Gillian Welch, Cat Power and Beth Orton to eels and Cowboy Junkies. A classically trained pianist and a self-taught guitarist with influences ranging from Neil Young to Duke Ellington she is a performer who embraces experimentation.  Everall, a genre hopping bass-clarinet wielding wunderkind, has developed a style of playing that combines traditional classical training with avant garde extended techniques. He has performed concerts spanning a vast array of repertoires across three continents and ten countries. He brings a new level of musical depth to Traicos’ reflective and melodious songs, underpinning and enhancing one of the most captivating voices in music today.

Unnatural Congress is the friends’ first collaboration together, and combines a collection of original pieces with surprising arrangements,  drawing upon the strengths of classical, percussive and popular contemporary music to produce a work that is intriguing and incredibly beautiful.
